SUV Vs. Minivan for Your Family

If you are in the market for a new vehicle to transport your family, you might be wondering if a minivan or SUV would be best. An SUV is an attractive option, mostly due to the fact that the minivan has a negative “soccer mom” association. But when it comes to cargo space, gas mileage, and seating more than two or three kids, you may actually be better off with a minivan. Here are some things to consider.

Cargo Space

You might think the SUV is bigger; but in reality, minivans have much more cargo space. Even the smallest minivans have at least 30 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row seating, while SUVs never have more than 20 cubic feet. Some minivans also allow you to store the third row seating to allow for additional cargo space, up to 80 cubic feet. Think carefully about how much cargo space you really need.

Passenger Space

If you have older kids, teens, or want to be prepared for teens down the road, you are probably better off with a minivan. SUVs have the same seating schemes as minivans, with bucket seats at the front, captains chairs or bench seat on the second row, and a bench seat on the third row, but minivans have lower floors, higher ceilings, and more space between passengers. This is important if you’ll have teens or adults riding in the back seats.

Towing and All Wheel Drive

If you aren’t going to be doing any camping or sporting activities, you probably aren’t going to need to tow anything or worry about all wheel drive. But if you like to travel out of state where these features may be needed, you might want to consider an SUV. But even most minivans are capable of towing about 3500 pounds, which is enough for a small boat.

Fuel Economy

There is no doubt that minivans have better mileage than SUVs. An SUV is not likely to get better than 18 to 23 mpg, whereas a minivan will likely get from 24 to 30 mpg. It may not seem like a huge difference, but that cost can add up, especially if you’re taking a lot of road trips or have a long commute.
