Prizes include $2,000 cash or items of that value to help support the charity’s critical mission.

This month’s charity winner is Mi Escuela Montessori.

Mi Escuela Montessori is the first bilingual Public charter Montessori school in the state of Florida. It’s also the only PK-8th grade dual language immersion Montessori school in Polk County.
The school’s curriculum is designed based on the educational program developed by Dr. Maria Montessori and the two-way, dual-language immersion program recommended by renowned language learning experts. At Mi Escuela Montessori, the bilingual education spans from PK through middle school, which is something unique to this school. And this one-of-a-kind education provider also offers after school education.

Mi Escuela Montessori’s mission is to empower children to become bilingual communicators and hone their English skills while preserving their heritage language and developing a sense of cultural identity. But the school’s curriculum has also been designed to teach English-speaking children a new language. Indeed, Mi Escuela Montessori yearns for all children to develop fluency in English and Spanish and enter the workforce with a significant advantage. This, in turn, provides children in the community with an invaluable opportunity to become bilingual and independent and enhance their self-esteem.
Such a curriculum is a wonderful way to raise awareness about the importance of language heritage and bilingualism. But the mission of this unique school is also valuable because it elevates the community and turns children into highly skilled professionals. It opens up the field of opportunities for them and increases their likelihood to earn a higher salary than their monolingual counterparts.

For this incredible contribution to the local community and society in general, the school was awarded the coveted $2,000 cash prize. “We will use this funding to purchase bilingual curriculum materials so that we can support students in developing bi-literacy in both English and Spanish,” says Kelly De La Cruz, Founder and Executive Director of Mi Escuela Montessori.
This extraordinary bilingual school opened enrollment for the 2021-2022 school year in November 2020. And it will welcome its first students in August 2021.
